Thornton and Judith Ford founded Thorn Ford Dental Laboratory in 1977. Located in Bothell, Washington, it rapidly became the premier prosthetics laboratory in the Pacific Northwest. Since 2003, it has been owned and operated by Loren Ford and his wife, Margarete. Thornton was certified in removable appliances and positioned his laboratory to service the growing need for high end results in a field that was being neglected in favor of developing technology in fixed prosthetics. Because of the need to retain control of multi-discipline work, such as precision attachments and implants, the laboratory subsequently evolved to full service while maintaining its emphasis on high end and high quality production in all laboratory specialties. He began his career in 1957 at Harrison Dental Laboratory of Seattle, Washington, one of the most progressive and largest dental laboratories in the world at that time. He was trained at the bench by a number of master technicians and directly worked with several prosthodontic teaching clinicians during a time of rapid change and improvements in removable technology. Mr. Ford is familiar with a wide range of theories of full denture occlusion and esthetics. Indeed, he has worked alongside many of the founders of the concepts and techniques being used in today's dentures, including implants. Part of his duties with Harrison Dental Laboratory was to present the ideas developed by the prosthodontists to dentists in general practice as a liaison between the dental profession and his dental laboratory employer. Thornton Ford is a skilled trainer and is able to present the complex relationship of esthetics and function in full dentures in clear and simple terms.
